Degrees vs. Values: What Truly Defines Success?

In today’s world, earning a degree has become almost synonymous with success and societal prestige. Education is undoubtedly crucial, but for many, obtaining a degree is no longer just about pursuing personal interests or career aspirations—it has evolved into a status symbol, especially for parents.

Some parents view their child’s academic achievements as a way to maintain their social standing among family and friends. Others see it as a means of fulfilling their own unfulfilled dreams, wanting their children to achieve what they could not due to a lack of resources or opportunities. While these intentions stem from love and sacrifice, they can inadvertently place undue pressure on children.

The Dilemma for Students

With a vast array of courses and career opportunities available today, many children find themselves at a crossroads. Should they pursue their parents’ dreams out of gratitude for their sacrifices, or should they follow their own passions and ambitions? This internal conflict can leave them overwhelmed, unsure of which path to take.

Beyond Degrees: The Importance of Values

What often gets overlooked in this race for qualifications is the significance of being a good human being—something no university or degree can teach. While academic achievements and prestigious degrees can open doors, they are meaningless without empathy, integrity, and life skills.

Imagine a future where a course on “Being a Good Human” exists. Such a program could teach compassion, kindness, and ethical behavior—qualities that truly make the world a better place. After all, you might have numerous qualifications and degrees from the best universities, but if you lack basic humanity and the ability to lead a happy, meaningful life, those achievements hold little value.

True Education: Passing on Values

True education lies in fostering good values, cultivating life skills, and passing these on to future generations. It is these intangible lessons—respect, honesty, and a sense of responsibility—that create a harmonious society. The ultimate goal should not only be personal success but also contributing to a better world.

I have personally encountered people who take great pride in their educational qualifications but fail to reflect those achievements in their behavior. The way they speak and treat others, especially those they consider beneath them, reveals their true character. In such cases, does having a postgraduate degree or possessing knowledge and wisdom truly hold value? Whether it’s your house help or your neighbor, speak and act in a way that earns respect through kindness and humility, rather than expecting respect solely because of your position or accomplishments.

Earning a degree is important, but it should not overshadow the need to nurture good character. A balance between academic success and personal growth is what creates well-rounded individuals capable of making a difference.
