Faces showing different emotions blog post Akshata Shanbhag

Are Emotions Contagious?

Have you ever felt happy just because someone else was smiling? Or felt sad or stressed after talking to someone upset? That’s not a coincidence. It’s something called emotional contagion — and yes, emotions are contagious.

A baby starts crying after hearing another baby cry. One person’s stress at work can affect the whole team. A friend’s excitement can make you feel excited too!

Emotional contagion means emotions can spread from one person to another — just like a cold. You might “catch” someone else’s mood without even realizing it. If someone is laughing, you might feel happy too. But if they are angry or sad, you might start feeling low.

Have you wondered how emotions spread ?

Our brain has mirror neurons that copy other people’s emotions. We often copy facial expressions, tone of voice, or even body language.Even social media posts or messages can make us feel a certain way.

That’s how we “catch” emotions — just by being around someone, watching a video, or reading a message.

Being aware of emotional contagion helps us understand why our mood changes around people and helps us remain calm in negative situations. We should surround ourselves with people who uplift us and spread good energy to others too.

How to Protect your Energy:

  • Stay away from people who always bring negative vibes.
  • Take deep breaths when you feel stressed.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  •  Practice gratitude and self-care.
  • You don’t have to absorb everyone’s mood.

Emotions are powerful. They can lift you up or bring you down — depending on who you’re around. So be mindful of the company you keep and the energy you share. Let’s choose to spread kindness, joy, and calmness every day!
